Paleokastritsa
After breakfast a nice drive along the greenery of the countryside to Paleokastritsa, famous for the crystal blue-green sea water of its beaches, the mysterious grottoes, the impressive rocks and bays, forming one of the most beautiful places in Greece.
It is also here, that archaeologists suspect the existence of the legendary castle of King Alkinoos, according to the Homeric mythology. We visit the 18th century Monastery, interesting for its collection of Byzantine icons and its architecture, situated at the edge of a rock, with a splendid view over the Ionian Sea.
Lakones and Bella Vista
Continuing our excursion, we proceed to the viewpoint, near picturesque Lakones village, called Bella Vista. Here we will stop to admire the most beautiful panorama in Europe: the view over Paleokastritsa and its surrounding places in all its majesty.
Our next stop will be near Bella Vista for “Ouzo and Meze”. Passing all through typical villages, like Makrades and Troumbetas and the splendid natural sites of this hilly part of the island , you have free time for lunch in a typical tavern with fresh fish and fishing village called Kassiopi, with its brightly coloured bobbing boats with tiers of red-roofed villas surrounding the bay.
Castle of Kassiopi
Kassiopi was a thriving centre in Roman times, with its own coinage and temples. The castle which looms over the harbour is built on foundations from this period, and the ruins that remain today are Venetian, dating from a time when it was an important naval outpost. Here you have free time for lunch in a typical tavern with fresh fish.
Our late afternoon return through the villages of Kalami and picturesque fisher-bay of Kouloura, Nissaki, Barbati, Ipsos and Dassia will again be through the greenery of the countryside, offering you a fantastic view over the neighbouring State of Albania.
